Golf Tips - How to Read Greens Like Tiger Woods (Almost!)
By Matthew Lord
Putting is difficult to many people for a variety of reasons, and many times it is due to the inability to properly read putts. Once you learn how to read greens properly then your game will get so much better that you will not be able to believe the scores that you are shooting. Here are three tips to help you master the greens and start reading and sinking putts like Tiger!
1. First and foremost when reading greens get as low to the ground as possible. If you have watched Tiger Woods reading putts then you can see that he get pretty low to the ground. Someone who does it even better is the young Columbian sensation Camilo Villegas. I know that many people including myself are not in great enough shape to lie down on the ground to read putts, but what you can do is find a low area just off the green such as a bunker to stand in. Getting eye level with the putt will make it easier to read.
2. In addition to getting lower, you can also read a putt with your feet. Often times golfers pay attention to the break around the hole, but neglect the break during the first part of the putt. A great way to read the initial break of the putt is to feel where your feet and which way your body is slanting. Better green reading can be achieved by using this method.
3. Last but not least make sure that you are completely focused on the task at hand. Most people are distracted when putting, but not Tiger Woods. He has total concentration and often times putts his hands around his hat and face in order to create a type of tunnel vision for seeing the proper line of the putt. Try this to get better at putting.
These three methods should really help you learn how to read greens, play better golf, and shoot lower scores. Once you are doing this the game of golf will become so much more fun!
