Guidance For a Struggling Putter – Speed is Key

Guidance For a Struggling Putter - Speed is Key
By James Leeney

One of the biggest aspects of golf that players struggle with is the short game, more specifically, putting. Crushing a driver off the tee and hitting your irons accurately are approached as the more serious aspects of golf. Putting is the one aspect of golf that is deceivingly difficult. It may seem that you can just "tap" the ball in the hole, but there is so much more to deciding how you are going to hit that shot. It is vital to answer these questions in order to shave strokes off of your handicap.

1. Is there and up-hill or down-hill slope? This is the first thing most golfers look at when approaching a putt, but most also do not take into account how important this read is. If you are putting up-hill, then you will have to use more force in the stroke, resulting in an increased speed and decreased break, given there is a break. The opposite is true for a down-hill put. On down-hill puts, you utilize gravity and hit the ball with less force, resulting in an increased break, given there is a break. The key to this read is determining the speed of your shot.

2. Is there a break? After determining the speed you will use in your shot, get 25-30 feet behind your ball, get close to the green surface, and determine if you have a break. When you find that the green breaks in your ball's path, you then have to take into account the speed you are using. For example, the downhill putt will break more than the uphill putt, so you must aim the ball more into the break in order to achieve a successful shot. A softer shot means the ball will break more.

3. What is your target point? Now that you have your ball speed and break taken into account, where are you going to aim your shot? The key here is to find a spot in the break for the ball to start losing speed, and the slope will naturally speed the ball toward the hole.

4. What is the grain read? This is an important aspect of putting which many golfers, especially those new to the game, neglect. The grain is simply how the grass lays on the green and plays a major role in determining the direction is the ball. The grass always lays to the setting sun, so this is a simple way in determining the grain.

All in all, the putting aspect of golf, if mastered, can shave a lot of strokes off a golfer's average score. The key to putting is practice. You cannot just read an article such as this and become a PGA pro-style putter the next day. You need to go to the practice green and determine how to control ball speed, where to target the ball on breaks, and practice using the grain in your shots.

  1. This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like ‘Mixview’ that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you’re listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of “neighbors” will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune “Social” is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.
