Golf for Beginners: Getting Started

Golf for beginners can be a very exciting sport especially if one favors outdoor interactive activities. One of the most popular outdoor games is golf, anybody could easily learn to love.

Here players known as golfers attempt to hit the balls into different holes inside a golf course using different types of clubs. The one who hits a ball inside the holes with the smallest number of strokes usually wins the game. It is often played as a competition either by individuals or by team. For individual category, each player plays for the lowest number of strokes he/she and this is also known as the stroke play whereas playing teams aim for the lowest score on most individual holes on each players of a team. Such is known as the match play.

Golf for beginners may seem very confusing as well as complex game. However if you get to learn the basics, you might just be one of those who are thoroughly engaged with the sport. For starters, it might be very helpful if you get to understand the terms commonly used while playing this sport. Here are some terms and descriptions:

Golf course - this is the playing area where holes are stationed. It consists of the teeing area, the area where the ball is placed so the player can strike it, marked by two markers showing the legal boundary of the tee area. Also included are the fairway (area between the green and the tee box), rough (area between the fairway and the out of bounds markers) and the putting green (area where the ball is putted to play a stroke on the green).  There are about 18 holes in the whole golf course but common ones have 9 holes only but can be played twice for an 18-hole play.

Play of the game – a round consists of 18 holes played in a particular order based on the course layout. The game starts when the ball is hit in the tee area with the aim of directing it closer to the hole as possible. Each player is directed to get his ball holed in the smallest possible number of strokes. What makes the game exciting is the presence of hazards typical of the general outline of golf courses.

Golf etiquette – players should be aware that there are strict particular rules for golf beginners, which contrast those who really are knowledgeable. For proper etiquette, a set of rules is given and this may not be entirely different for amateurs and expert players.

Equipment – golf clubs, golf balls, tees, golf shoes, golf bag, and golf cart are the common equipment when playing golf. There are different types of golf clubs depending on the type of shot as well as the area to which the strike is to be performed. Woods are used for long distance fairway shots whereas irons are for varying types of shots.
